In the past fifteen years, remittances have largely outpaced global development aid. Their amount has also increased significantly within the EU, reaching €31.2 billion in 2010. The event chaired by Staffan Jerneck (CEPS) focused on the specifics of remittances in the EU’s single market, most importantly on challenges ahead to achieve higher efficiency.

In recent decades, there has been a discernible trend toward the homogenisation of banking models, favouring the ‘shareholder-value’ banks. In the aftermath of the crisis, this model is being called into question and the merits of alternative ‘stakeholder value’ models are being considered.

Recent bank failures have dramatically illustrated the insufficient harmonisation of deposit insurance in the EU. Memories of the run on Northern Rock (2007) or the failing Icelandic banks (2008/09) are fresh in many depositors’ minds. Designing an efficient scheme to underpin the single financial market is therefore a key policy priority.

This ECRI Breakfast Meeting gave participants the chance to discuss the latest findings of Intrum Justitia’s forthcoming 2010 European Payment Index, an annually published report on the payment behaviour of consumers, business and the public sector.

The results of the survey, presented by Intrum CEO Lars Wollung and author Madeleine Bosch, fed into the discussion of Rapporteur Barbara Weiler’s draft report on the Commission proposal to revamp the current legislation on late payments.

On 14 October 2009 ECRI hosted a major conference on the topic of financial education and responsible lending. In the wake of the financial cirisis as well as in the context of a new European Parliament and a newly appointed Commission, stakeholders were invited to participate in this ECRI conference and to discuss with the assembled speakers the lessons learned, the future challenges faced and possible actions to be taken in the field of responsible lending and borrowing.
